Girl on beachLocation : 10 Gwithian Towans, Gwithian, Cornwall, TR27 5BT.  The Sunset Surf Cafe is one of my favourite spots in the UK. The cafe is positioned overlooking the sea by one of the best beaches we have in England, Gwithian. There is everything you could need to survive a day at the beach here, great food, kit hire, surf school and a shop selling ice creams and beach toys.

Getting there

When navigating the narrow road turning of the B3301 down towards the coast, you will pass a couple grassy of off-road parking areas. These are around a mile before you hit the coast, the cafe and the beach. You can park here, but if like us you have wetsuits, body boards, cricket sets, wind break and a sun tent, you might want to use the public car park in front of the cafe on the top of the cliffs. It’s a shorter walk down to the beach carrying all that gear.

Simply good food

The cafe does not try to be pretentious. Instead it serves good wholesome food in a lovely chilled atmosphere. We have had both lunch and dinners at Sunset Surf. The menu changes around lunchtime so if you get there in the morning try the breakfasts, hot chocolate, steak sandwich or the good selection of light snacks. Emma and Josh love the fish and chips or the burgers. The menu changes a little each season and has previously included risotto, home made burgers, local fish and steak, all of which have never disappointed.

For the last couple of years, dining has continued into the evening in high season. If you are eating later it’s best to check out if you can book. Give them a call to check opening times. Details on their website

The renovation

The cafe has gone through a make-over in 2015. We have not seen the changes first hand yet, but are booked to head down to Cornwall in August. By following their Facebook pages we can see there is a new decking area hosting more outdoor seating and the interior has a fresh modern new look. I quite liked the quirky decor with all the surf boards hanging from walls and ceiling. It will be interesting to see if the kept the original feel.

The owners also run the hire shop, surf schools and surf shop, perfect if you want to try your hand at becoming the next Laird Hamilton or Layne Beachley. When the kids were younger we hired wetsuits from here. The last couple of suits we have bought for Emma have also come from here. Now she is growing, we can get a better fit which keep her warmer in the sea. Check out our posts on body boarding for more details.

Location, location, location

A couple of hundred metres from the cafe is the beach. Perfect sand, lovely surf which gets larger the further down the beach you go, perfect for young paddlers and serious boarders alike. There are also superb rock pools at low tide and life guards to keep you safe during the peak season.

Please leave a comment if you have been to the Sunset Surf Cafe and let us know what the menu is like this year. We always welcome feedback on our posts.
